Bank of Zambia Quarterly Brief - Q2 2009

The Bank of Zambia Quarterly Brief held today. Much there in terms of statistics as always. Huge thanks to a good friend of the Zambian Economist who has made this available to us. The BOZ website does not have it yet! I was struck particularly by the tourism and FDI numbers :
During the second quarter of 2009, international arrivals at the country’s four international airports5 were 88,066 passengers compared to 80,112 passengers in the first quarter of 2009. However, this was lower than the 113,129 passengers recorded during the corresponding period in 2008.....On a year to-date basis, investment pledges totalled US $762.7 million compared with the US $1,820.7 million recorded during the same period in 2008.
Positive news though on the copper front, with production at 349,333 tonnes for the six months to June this year compared to 288,057 tonnes in the same period last year, prompting Fundanga to predict copper production may 600,000 by the end of the year. As we have previously noted copper prices are also marching up.
